Android 14 at 6nm: Inside the ZESTECH ZT-A91 MTK8781
Vehicle Navigation Platform
The ZT-A91 pairs an octa-core MediaTek MTK8781 built on a 6nm process with Android 14.0, a 2K 120Hz MIPI display, true optical audio output, a 32-band DSP and a built-in 360 panoramic option — a platform designed to stay current for years rather than months.
Why the Platform Matters More Than the Screen
Buyers compare head units by screen size and price. Installers and distributors know the real question is different: how long will this hardware still run current apps? That answer comes from the chipset, the operating system and the thermal design — and it is exactly where the ZT-A91 was built to compete.
01 Chipset generationA 6nm octa-core with Cortex-A76 performance cores handles modern navigation, streaming and multitasking where older quad-core platforms stutter. | 02 Operating systemAndroid 14.0 ships on the platform from day one, so app compatibility and security updates start from the current release rather than a legacy base. | 03 Display bandwidthA 120Hz refresh rate and MIPI interface keep maps, cameras and video smooth — and 2K output gives the resolution headroom OEM instrument clusters expect. |
04 Expansion path4G, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2, optical audio and an optional 360 panoramic system are integrated rather than bolted on. |
The MTK8781 Core Platform
At the centre sits the MediaTek MTK8781, a 6nm octa-core chip configured as 2 × A76 at 2.2GHz plus 6 × A55 at 2.0GHz with Mali-G57 class graphics. The big-core arrangement matters: navigation routing, voice assistants and split-screen use stay responsive because the heavy threads land on A76 cores instead of queuing behind efficiency cores.
Memory and storage are configured to order. RAM runs LPDDR4X in 4G, 6G, 8G or 12G capacities; storage uses UMCP in 64G, 128G, 256G or 512G. That ladder lets one platform cover everything from a value taxi build to a flagship retail unit without a second board design.
2K Display at 120Hz
The display path is built for both quality and speed. A capacitive touch screen drives through a MIPI interface at up to 2K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate — double the 60Hz of the previous generation. On a head unit that means smoother map panning, tear-free camera switching and noticeably better touch response.
2K ResolutionHigh pixel density for maps, video and multi-window layouts. | 120 Refresh rate120Hz updates reduce motion blur and input lag at speed. | MI InterfaceMIPI keeps the panel connection fast and interference-resistant. |
Audio Architecture: Real Amp, Real DSP
Audio is where most Android head units compromise, so it is worth being specific. The ZT-A91 routes output through a TDA7851 / 7850 / 7738 power amplifier in a 4.1 channel configuration, with 2 AUX inputs (left and right) available for external sources.
The DSP section is the differentiator. Two DSP platforms are offered — BU32107 and AK7738 — and they support a 32-band professional equalizer alongside 5.1 channel surround sound. A 32-band EQ is a tuning tool, not a gimmick: it lets an installer correct cabin resonance by frequency instead of reaching for a global bass knob.
For purists there is also a true optical output — digital audio leaves the chassis without passing through the internal amplifier, ready for an outboard DSP or processor in a competition build.
Connectivity: 4G, Dual-Band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2
Three radios cover the ways modern vehicles stay online.
4G cellular
Full multi-band support across LTE and legacy networks: TDD-LTE B38, B39, B40, B41; LTE-FDD B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B17, B20; WCDMA B1, B2, B4, B5, B8; and GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900. That band list is broad enough for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America and most of Asia from a single hardware variant.
Dual-band WiFi
WiFi runs 2.4GHz and 5GHz on 1 × 1 20/40/80MHz, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. The 2.4GHz band handles interference and wall penetration better; 5GHz moves data faster. Automatic band selection means the unit uses the right one without user intervention.
Bluetooth 5.2
Bluetooth 5.2 brings lower power consumption and more efficient connection management, with LE synchronous channels that carry multi-device audio and LE power control that adapts transmitter output. The practical result is smoother coexistence with other 2.4GHz devices in a busy cabin.
Radio, Video and I/O
FM TunerTEF6686 tuner with RDS covering 65MHz to 108MHz — the full FM band including the OIRT range still used in parts of Eastern Europe. | HD Video decodeHD 1920 × 1080 decoding with hardware codec support for MPEG-1/2/4, AVI and RMVB containers, plus MPEG, OGG, FLAC, AAC, AMR, MIDI and APE audio. | IM Image formatsJPG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and PNG supported for wallpaper, boot logo and image browsing. |
Video input accepts up to two AUX or camera sources, with HD 1920 × 1080 codec handling; video output supports the same HD resolution for driving rear screens or passenger displays.
USB provision is generous: three rear USB 2.0 ports plus one front USB 2.0 port. Storage is certified to 128GB of memory and 1TB mobile hard drives — enough for offline maps, a media library and dash-camera archiving on the same unit.
Camera Support and 360 Panoramic Option
The rear-view camera path handles CVBS, AHD 720P and AHD 1080P at 25 or 30 frames per second, plus TVI 720 at 30 frames. That covers the analogue, AHD and TVI cameras installers actually stock, rather than locking a build to one camera standard.
For higher-end vehicles the platform offers a built-in 360 panoramic system as an option, supporting 720P or 1080P four-camera surround view with front, rear, left and right channels stitched on the head unit itself — no separate panoramic control box.
CV CVBSLegacy composite camera support for basic reverse-camera builds. | AH AHDAHD 720P and 1080P at 25/30fps for sharp rear-view imaging. | TV TVITVI 720 at 30fps for installers standardised on that format. |
ZT-A91 vs a Previous-Generation Platform
Where it matters commercially: a 6nm MTK8781 with Android 14 keeps the platform inside the app-support window for years, and the integrated 360 panoramic option removes a separate control box from the bill of materials.
